Take Control of Your Own Life

Take Control

Do you feel like people take advantage of you? Do you allow others to control your time or your priorities? If you answered yes, let me tell you about a simple solution to your problem. By learning to say two phrases, you can regain control of your life. Learn to say no, or not now.

Doing What is Important

Saying no or not now to others will allow you to say yes to you, yes to those who are important to you, and yes to those things or activities that you care about. By saying no and not now to others, you will regain control of your time management, your goal setting, and your direction in life. When you say these words, mean them. Follow through so that you can do what is important to you. Establish your goals and prioritize them.

Your Compass

You should be using your goals as your compass in life since they reflect what you have predetermined to be important to you. Prioritization points you the direction you want to go and helps you to get there.

Apply to Other Areas

This applies to more than just your time. It applies to your finances as well. Saying no or not now (or “not so much right now‘) allows you to say yes to the important things later. Example: Saying no to spending $150 every month eating out but saying yes to $100 a month means a $50 per month savings. Let’s say you go through your entire budget doing this and you free up $200 a month. Let’s say to systematically invested this $200 a month over the next 15 years. Depending on your rate of return your $200 a month could become somewhere near $75,000 (did someone say college fund?).  So by saying no, not now, or not so much, you are able to say YES to the things that are important to you.

You have a choice, and the choice is yours.

  7. Very cool. Stay the course. You will hear a lot of advice along the way…some will work for you and some will not. Think of it as a smorgasbord. Also, make a game out of it so you have fun doing it. Drop me a note when you hit the $1,000.

I just started a new debt program in my own life using a lot of the information Dave Ramsey has provided in his books. I am a huge fan of his style of teaching. I am about a month into my new debt-free plan and it feels really good to be able to understand when my end date is. I am using the “snowball” technique to start, while working to save $1000. Things are good so far, and hopefully they keep getting better.
